Bulldog Chihuahua Mix Breed Guide

While purebred dogs remain the most wanted ones, mixed-breed or designer dogs are also gaining a lot of popularity lately. Some breed mixes are quite well-known, whereas other hybrids don’t have the same level of awareness. In today’s guide, I will talk about the mix between bulldogs and chihuahuas, which are known as bullhuahuas.

But, I will also tackle some other aspects regarding the other mix-breed Chihuahua hybrid dogs. So, stay tuned to see if these puppies are the perfect match for your preferences and lifestyle.

Bulldog Chihuahua Mix Breed Guide – Main Highlights

The mix between a Chihuahua and an English bulldog is known as a bullhuahua. Their size is medium or small and they can reach a height of 9 to 12 inches. A bullhuahua can weigh between 20 and 30 pounds. I admit I was baffled at first when I learned about this hybrid dog breed. I love dogs but I’ve always had normal breeds such as boxers and Golden retrievers.

I am also a fan of Bern Sheppard dogs. They are huge but they are so lovely. But, that’s a topic for another guide. Let’s return to bullhuahuas and see some other important highlights that you should be aware of:

  • Bullhuahua puppies are pretty hard to train because they’re very stubborn and strong-willed;
  • I cannot seem to find the exact time and location where this hybrid breed was first created. That’s because the breed is quite new;
  • These puppies are lovely, sweet, cute, courageous, and they are great with both adults and children;
  • They’re very sensitive when it comes to their surroundings which makes them great family dogs;
  • To avoid having hair everywhere around the house, you must use a good vacuum, since these pets are moderate shedders;
  • You should always track your bullhuahua’s weight and diet. Otherwise, they might become overweight;
  • The life span of a bullhuahua is approximately 14 years;
  • To keep your dog in good shape and healthy, you must engage it in ample exercise on a daily basis.

Bulldog Chihuahua Mix Breed Guide – How They Look

It’s almost impossible to predict the way a hybrid puppy will look like till it’s born. So, let’s see the characteristics of this dog in terms of coat and fur, weight and height, and more.

Weight & Height

A bullhuahua is smaller than a bulldog but larger than a chihuahua. Some of these dogs are pretty small, while most of them are medium-sized pets. Normally, a bullhuahua is taller than 9 inches but it doesn’t exceed a height of 12 inches. The ideal weight of an adult bullhuahua should revolve around 20-30 pounds. Unlike frail Chihuahuas, these dogs have a stronger body that resembles more the ones of bulldogs.

Coat & Fur

The length of the fur will vary based on the type of parents the dog has. For instance, Chihuahuas can be short-haired or long-haired. If the parent has a longer coat, your puppy will also inherit that feature but the overall fur won’t be as long as the one of its parents.

The coat of a bullhuahua is also very dense and the color may vary. You’ll see black, white, red, fawn, and brindle bullhuahuas.

History

These puppies were created for companionship purposes alone. We don’t exactly know where everything started but it seems that the intentionally mixing and breeding took place somewhere in North America, in the 2000s. The general belief is that breeders tried to diminish the breathing problems of English bulldogs while also creating a cute and compact dog with a fun personality.

The English Bulldog

The history of the English bulldog is very sad. They were bred in England, in the 13th century to be used as fight dogs in terrible blood sports. People used to bet on one dog or the other to win money. Fortunately, these cruel sports were banned in 1835, but that only made the breed to become almost extinct.

Years have passed, and dog breeders have finally given bulldogs a second chance to redeem themselves. And, we soon discovered that the real nature of these dogs is actually very pleasant. They’re gentle, loving, and very friendly. In terms of popularity, English bulldogs are the 5th on the list.

A normal bulldog weighs between 40 and 50 pounds and has a height of about 14-15 inches. Females are slightly smaller than that. These dogs deal with numerous health issues. Therefore, their lifespan is pretty short (8-10 years).

The Chi-Chi or Chihuahua

Chihuahuas are believed to be an ancient breed but their origins remain a mystery. Some people say they came from China, others believe they were created in South America, and a few individuals even think they appeared in Egypt. Chi-Chis are known as toy or purse dogs because of their tiny figure. Despite their small size, these dogs have huge sassy personalities.

Chihuahuas weigh less than 6 pounds and have a height of 5 to 8 inches. However, they live up to 14-16 years which is really impressive.

Types of Breed Mixes Between Chihuahuas and Bulldogs

There are three types of bulldogs in the world, and each of them was mixed with Chihuahuas, so let’s see some details about each of them.

Chihuahuas and English Bulldogs

The mix between an English bulldog and a Chi-Chi results in a medium or even small puppy, smaller than the English bulldog. Based on the type of mix and the size of both parents, this hybrid puppy can have a greatly varied weight, from as low as 4 pounds to as high as 50 pounds.

Even as a hybrid, you will recognize specific bulldog traits in the new puppy such as its wrinkly head, the famous underbite, and pushed-in face. It also depends on which parent comes with the dominant genes. Hence, the puppy will resemble more to a bulldog if the bulldog parent offered those types of genes.

While these dogs are friendly and loving, they might be stubborn and dominant thanks to the inherited bossy genes from the Chi-Chi parent.

Chihuahuas and French Bulldogs

This hybrid dog looks adorable. It’s petite with big Frenchie ears. These dogs are known as Mexican Frenchie, Frencheenie, or Chibull. They might be little fireballs but they’re one of the best choices when it comes to apartment dogs. Their tiny bodies measure around 10 to 30 pounds and they have a height of about 6 to 12 inches. However, they’re full of personality.

Their playstyle is very vocal, sassy, and spunky, but they’re highly protective of their owners. You’ll need time to focus on playing with them since they require a lot of attention. Most importantly, a Frencheenie tends to become overly attached to one single person. You could even say these dogs are a tad needy. They live up to 10-15 years.

Chihuahuas and American Bulldogs

These hybrid dogs are called either American bullhuahuas or American bulleenie. The pups were bred for companionship and they’re both friendly and energetic. Obviously, they also have a sassy personality trait that comes from their Chihuahua parents. The majority of these crossbreeds occurred during numerous dog generations because of the important size difference between the parents.

American bullhuahuas are recognized by official associations such as the DRA. I must confess they look sweet but pretty funny with their big round eyes, tiny round heads, and big ears. Their body is a lean and muscular one which, if you ask me, it’s the perfect combo between the lean and long body of a Chi-Chi and the stock figure of a bulldog.

Pros and Cons of Having a Bullhuahua as a Pet

Advantages

  • Some dog experts consider mixed breeds to be healthier than purebreds;
  • These puppies are simply adorable and very friendly;
  • They have a moderate size and their energy isn’t overwhelming so they are great as apartment pets.

Disadvantages

  • Because of their small size, these puppies might develop a number of health conditions;
  • They are pretty expensive, especially Frencheenies. That happens because of the way they’re being born, through C- section surgery;
  • Many of these hybrid dogs could develop breathing problems and they tend to overheat;
  • They’re quite tricky to train since they have strong personalities.

Taking Good Care of Your Bullhuahua Dog

Here are some guidelines and advice on how to take proper care of your adorable bullhuahua pet.

Exercise Needs

In terms of exercise requirements, most bullhuahuas are pretty low-maintenance. Their energy level is medium so all they need is a short 30-minute walk every day. They are however very playful, so make sure you mix things up a bit and throw them their favorite toy for them to retrieve. Bullhuahuas should engage in physical activities for approximately 5 miles each week.

At the same time, you must be careful during hot summer days, since the breed is prone to brachycephalic health conditions. Simply put, these dogs are sensitive to heat which means you should probably lower their sun exposure during hot days. Indoor exercise and playtime are also needed. If a bullhuahua gets bored, it will start to destroy things.

Consider toy puzzles followed by food rewards to maintain your little buddy stimulated and busy.

Grooming & Maintenance

Bullhuahuas are low-maintenance when it comes to grooming as well, despite the fact that they’re not hypoallergenic pets. Because of their small mouth, their teeth get crowded, so you’ll need to brush their teeth on a daily basis to avoid dental problems. Vets say that poor dental hygiene is sometimes connected to health conditions. So, brushing the teeth of your bullhuahua is very important.

They shed lightly and they don’t have a very long coat, so no issue there, whatsoever. Brush their coat with a slicker brush only a few times per week. That way, you’ll remove any loose fur. Every couple of weeks, you should clip your dog’s nails. However, make sure not to bathe it too often because that could lead to very dry skin. Bathing should be done only when and if necessary.

Proper Food for a Bullhuahua

You should feed your bullhuahua 1 or 2 dry kibble cups per day. On a monthly basis, feeding expenses amount to around $25-$30. Try not to give your dog a lot of treats because this breed is prone to obesity. Another way is to opt for healthy low-calorie treats such as carrots.

Bullhuahuas Trainability

Let’s first take a look at their parents:

  • Bulldogs are pretty smart dogs;
  • But, Chihuahuas are normally more intelligent than bulldogs.

Looking at these two facts, you might think that training your bullhuahua will be easy-breezy. Well, unfortunately, that’s not always the case with these little fellows since they can also be very strong-willed and stubborn. So, what you need is a lot of patience and perseverance when you’re training your hybrid dog.

Two strategies have proven themselves effective:

  • Assuming the Alpha male role in relation to your bullhuahua;
  • Positive reinforcement.

Even when they’re being very stubborn and you get frustrated, you should refrain yourself from punishing your dog. Punishment won’t lead anywhere and your pet might become aggressive.

Bad Habits of Bullhuahua Dogs

These hybrid dogs could become aggressive and territorial at times. It’s, therefore, essential to go out and encourage your puppy to engage in socializing activities with other dogs. They should also interact with other people to lower the risk of bad behavior. Bullhuahuas are lovely, pretty sociable, and affectionate. However, they’re also stubborn and hard to train.

This breed has the so-called “small dog syndrome.” In fact, instead of dealing with its and shaping their puppies into developing better habits, most bullhuahua owners allow these tantrums to occur because they don’t find them a major threat due to the small size of the dog. In other cases, the owners take the dogs out of that messy situation instead of trying to educate the pet.

This will only make those pets lose the chance to develop socializing skills and they might even become adult dogs that are nervous around other pets and people.

Between Chi-Chis and bulldogs, Chihuahuas are the ones that get anxious and nervous more often. They growl or yap at people as soon as they feel the slightest of threats. Through proper training and a lot of patience and perseverance, these personality traits can be minimized. Still, I felt responsible to list them all here for you to know and be aware of all these potential issues before adopting or buying a bullhuahua.

What Other Mixed-Breed Chihuahuas Are There?

There are virtually endless possibilities of Chi-Chi mixes. Here are some of the most popular ones.

Chihuahuas and Toy Poodles

These puppies are called Chi-Poo and they’re cute and little. They are low-maintenance and very loving with both adults and children. If you have a busy lifestyle, these dogs might be the ideal choice for a pet since they don’t really mind being alone for hours at a time. While they’re sociable, they’re also quiet and behave well during long travels.

Chihuahuas and Pomeranians

Pomeranians are among my favorite dogs, despite the fact that I’m not a fan of small breeds, but they’re so fluffy and adorable. A pomchi is affectionate and they behave well in most situations. However, they have a lot of energy without being hyperactive. This hybrid breed is very popular due to the fact that it’s independent but willing to please and has a cheerful attitude.

Chihuahuas and Cocker Spaniols

Chi-spaniels are quiet and they bark less than other breeds. They’re a bit funny-looking if you ask me, but they’re still cute. They represent great family pets because they’re great around kids. You can keep them in a tiny apartment as long as you take them out on a daily basis for short walks since they need some form of exercise.

FAQs

• Pulmonic stenosis;
• Breathing issues;
• Interverterbral disc hip dysplasia;

• Degeneration; etc.

Bulldog Chihuahua Mix Breed Guide – Bottom Line

Bullhuahuas are a whirlwind. At first glance, they seem very loving, friendly, and calm. But they’re also prone to several behavior issues and serious health problems. These hybrid dogs are undoubtedly adorable and cute. However, they might not be the ideal pet choice for families who also have other pets or very small kids.

This dog breed, like many other breeds, has its pros and cons. To be fair, in order to handle a bullhuahua properly, you must be very patient and rule with a firm hand. Otherwise, these doggos won’t take you seriously. Don’t ever forget that having and taking care of a dog is both a privilege and a responsibility.
